  Despite being at the receiving end of the economic slowdown, the printed circuit boards market still projects a positive outlook for the next few years. One of the primary factors driving this optimism within the industry is the demand from automotive electronics segment, which continues to generate substantial portion of revenue for printed circuit boards. Electronic components account for a considerable portion of the overall value of materials consumed in the production of cars. With this percentage slated to increase further in the near future, the stage is well set for robust growth in the PCB market over the next few years.

  Japan and Asia-Pacific collectively account for a major share of the worldwide printed circuit boards market, as stated by the new market research report on Printed Circuit Boards market. Asian countries such as India, China as well as Southeast Asian countries are central to the growth of the PCB industry. A key reason attributed to the growing significance of these countries is the rapid expansion of electronic manufacturing bases triggered by the shifting of production activities and facilities of overseas players into these countries to leverage lower labor and manufacturing cost benefits. Production facilities will gain additional thrust in these regions within the next few years.     The following are some of the key trends in China's PCB industry:

• The majority of makers yielded to climbing material and labor outlay and adjusted their prices in the past three months. Others kept or lowered quotes to attract orders from existing and new clients.
  
• Investment plans indicate growing support for the HDI category because of high returns. At present, only about 20 companies are engaged in the line due to elevated costs of required equipment.
  
• Enterprises are introducing models with higher density to match the miniaturization trend in portable electronics. The units have more layers and reduced line width/spacing and hole diameter.
  
• Some suppliers are exploring other materials to improve reliability and comply with green guidelines. A number have started adopting high-Tg and Grade-A boards, and are releasing halogen- and lead-free units.
  

     Three-month copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME) recently topped US$9,000/ton. LME copper closed at US$9,015/ton on December 8.

     The sources pointed out that if copper continues to trade at above US$8,500/ton, copper foil prices for January 2011 are likely to continue trending up. But PCB manufacturers will be reluctant to accept any higher prices due to the start of the traditional first-quarter slow season, the sources said.

     Demand for HDI boards used in smartphones and tablet PCs remained stable in November, but regular PCBs started showing weakness due to seasonality, according to copper foil provider Co-Tech. Meanwhile, CCL customers had to work off their inventory during the month as demand for IT and consumer electronics products slowed down, said the Taiwan-based firm.

     Co-Tech said its November revenues decreased 12.8% sequentially to NT$406 million, affected by falling shipments. The company expects sales to bounce back in January when demand from CCL customers picks up.
